How Young Is Too Young for Skincare?

A smiling young girl wearing a soft headband applies white face cream to her cheeks while looking into a bathroom mirror. Text beside her asks, “How Young Is Too Young for Skincare?”

Kids are becoming interested in skincare earlier than ever.

But does an 8-, 10-, or 12-year-old really need a multi-step skincare routine?

Usually, no.

That doesn't mean they shouldn't learn to take care of their skin. Childhood and the preteen years can actually be a great time to establish simple, healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Start Simple

There really isn’t one “right age” to begin skincare.

Once a child is regularly washing their own face, beginning to perspire more, playing sports, or simply becoming interested in skincare, it’s reasonable to introduce a few basics.

For younger skin, that may be nothing more than a gentle cleanser, lightweight moisturizer when needed, and daily SPF.

As puberty begins and skin starts to change, the routine can change with it. Increased oil, clogged pores, blackheads, or breakouts may mean it’s time to introduce products specifically suited to those concerns.

Don’t Let TikTok Build Their Skincare Routine

This is where parents need to pay attention.

A product may be trending, beautifully packaged, or used by a favorite influencer, but that doesn’t mean it belongs on young skin.

Strong acids, retinoids, aggressive exfoliants, and complicated combinations of active ingredients generally aren’t what healthy young skin needs.

More skincare isn’t necessarily better skincare—especially for kids.

Merle Norman Isn’t Just for Mom

This sometimes surprises people.

Merle Norman has several gentle skincare products that are perfect for introducing kids and preteens to a proper routine.

And rather than guessing based on what’s trending online, we can help choose products based on their age, their skin, and what they actually need.

We can start with just the basics and then adjust their routine as their skin changes.

Teach the Habit, Not the Hype...

The goal isn't to give a 10-year-old a 10-step skincare routine.

It's to teach them how to properly care for their skin.

Cleanse. Moisturize when needed. Protect with SPF.

Then add more only when their skin gives us a reason to.

Starting with a simple, age-appropriate routine can help create healthy skincare habits they'll carry with them for years.
